Wallace House: A Hub for Reconciliation, Art, and Community
Project Summary
The Wallace House in Harpersville, Alabama, stands as a testament to historical and cultural significance. Through a partnership with DesignAlabama’s Design Vision program, Auburn University’s Urban Studio, and Design Initiative, this project engaged 3rd- and 5th-year architecture students in a community-focused design process. Place Associates, serving as an adjunct faculty member, guided the students in meaningful community engagement and site analysis to shape a vision for the Wallace House as a center for storytelling, reconciliation, and cultural enrichment.
Outcomes
Heritage Trail System: Facilitated the creation of a trail network linking the Wallace House to key historical sites in Harpersville, preserving and sharing untold stories while fostering stronger connections to the area’s rich history.
Community Hub: Supported the development of spaces for education, art, and gatherings, including a visitor center, community kitchen, and market, designed to meet the needs of local events and promote community interaction.
Art and History Integration: Oversaw the introduction of innovative design elements like ghost structures, boardwalks, and artist studios, blending historical storytelling with creative expression to honor the site’s legacy.
How Place Associates Contributed
As an integral part of the project team, Place Associates worked alongside Marshall Anderson of Design Initiative and DesignAlabama to mentor the students through each stage of the project. By connecting students with local stakeholders and providing guidance on community engagement, Place Associates ensured that the final designs reflected the community’s aspirations and the site’s historical significance.
